Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano
For our last bookclub of the year (don't peak at the date), Karen selected Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. This novel depicts the lives of four sisters, their parents, lovers, and children and all the richness and messiness that comes with close, life-long relationships. Different characters narrate each chapter, and as the story unfolds, we see how each copes with the highs and lows of life and develops as a person.
Our impression of the book was generally positive. We enjoyed the storyline and although there were many serious issues touched upon in the book involving depression, injury, death, and abandonment, the take-aways from the characters who supported each other were uplifting themes of resilience, connection, truth, and love. The book makes references to Little Women throughout and can be interpreted as a modern spin on the classic tale.
The characters were well-developed and we were able to talk about our impressions of all four sisters, their parents, William, Alice and Izzy in quite some depth. We even discussed the role of close friendships with other minor characters who played important supportive roles.
One critique from many of us was that some of the characters' behaviors seemed extreme and therefore unbelievable. This happened repeatedly as many characters abandon family in their own way as a coping mechanism. This plot recurrence inspired some interesting conversations about people in our own lives who cut ties with family or friends and then later reconciled.
We also discussed different viewpoints about romantic love and whether or not soulmates exist. Would we sacrifice family for that one special person or would it be better just to shop around some more? What is the value of being accepted by someone and being seen for who we really are?
There were also many interests and hobbies of the characters that resonated with us in different ways such as the love of reading, sports, art, childcare, gardening, charity, and business.
All in all, there was a lot to discuss and quite a bit of conversation.
We were thrilled to have Liz on the call from her new home in snowy New England and of course Karen from Europe. We missed Amy and Rebecca this time but look forward to seeing them soon.
Well, Beautifuls, on to 2026!
