Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

For our last bookclub of 2018, we read Cathy's pick, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman.  This was the author's debut novel and we all liked it. The book is about a quirky woman who somewhat reluctantly develops a friendship with a new IT employee at work. Together they rescue an old man crossing the street who befriends them. Through all these new relationships, Eleanor starts reflecting on their families, her own family, her past, and her own identity.  We were drawn to the fact that the characters were very realistic, and we also enjoyed the ending (no spoilers).  Cathy recommended the audio version, which includes an array of Scottish accents.

The book inspired some interesting discussion about quirky people in our own lives, band groupies, parents, mental health issues, holidays, and gift giving (among other topics).  We concluded that since Lisa loves giving gifts, she should be Santa.  Here Rebecca contemplates what to ask Lisa for.  Wishing everyone a happy New Year!
