The Home Place

Rebecca holds one phone with Carrie on FaceTime and one phone with Karen on speaker while Amy asks Carrie a question

On February 1st, we met at Rebecca's in Santa Cruz to discuss The Home Place, a novel by Carrie La Seur.   The Amazon synopsis:
Carrie La Seur makes her remarkable debut with The Home Place, a mesmerizing, emotionally evocative, and atmospheric literary novel in the vein of The House Girl and A Land More Kind Than Home, in which a successful lawyer is pulled back into her troubled family’s life in rural Montana in the wake of her sister’s death.
I enjoyed the book.  I have never been to Montana, but the book does a good job of giving a sense of what it might be like to live there.  We all thought the character development was very good.

The best part was that we got to speak with the author during book club!  Rebecca went to college with Carrie, and we FaceTimed with Carrie who was in Montana.

Rebecca made a delicious lunch of salad with exotic spices, bread and goat cheese, and a sweet potato soup.

Thanks to Carrie for joining our club meeting!

Women Don't Ask

In December, we met at Lisa's house to discuss  Women Don't Ask: The High Cost of Avoiding Negotiation--and Positive Strategies for Change by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever.

This book made me angry, sad, and also fired up!  It covers all sorts of ways in which women have been conditioned not to ask for things--not just with salaries, but in all parts of life.

Unfortunately for me I left my copy on the plane so haven't finished it yet, but it's a very good read.

Lisa put a on a great spread of food to go with the book including fantastic potato leek soup.
